Bracing for Your Health: Knee Braces

Written By The Fix Medical on June 29, 2020

rsz kneepain3Knee pain can result from dozens of different conditions. From a temporary strain or sprain to arthritis and more, the overall prevalence of chronic knee pain currently sits at 19% of the population. While many individuals treat their knee pain with over-the-counter pain medication, others need some additional knee support to help take the pressure off their pain points.

Knee Braces: What You Need to Know

Knee pain is something that almost everyone will experience at some point in their lifetime. From “growing pains” as a child to sports injuries and even more severe medical conditions, such as knee osteoarthritis, knee pain is simply a part of life.

Depending on the nature of the pain and how severe it is, your doctor may suggest wearing a knee brace to help support the knee and the surrounding muscles/tendons, allowing it time to heal adequately.

Unloader Knee Braces

The Unloader knee braces provide patients with stability, support and pain relief if you have knee osteoarthritis affecting primarily only one side of your knee joint. The brace is designed to “unload” the knee by transferring pressure from one side of the joint to the other. An unloader knee brace may provide you with enough pain relief to improve your mobility and allow you to rest comfortably.

Unloader Knee Braces: How it Works

The unloader knee brace is designed to stabilize your knee joint and limit side movement of the joint.  It fits all the way around your leg and knee allowing flexibility for movement.  It is designed to put three points of pressure on the thigh bone, which forces the knee to bend away from the painful area of the joint.  The Unloader knee braces we use can unload either the medial (inner) or lateral (outer) part of the knee by adjusting the unloading hinge.

Benefits of a Knee Brace:

Wearing a brace can help delay knee replacement surgery.  It is a cost effective pain relief option that is safe and doesn’t have the side effects of pain medications. It will help improve stability and could even replace the need for surgery if combined with rehab and alternative treatments such as regenerative medicine therapy.
